After our previous colony collapsed last fall, we’re excited to report that bees are back in our Honey Bee exhibit in the Lower Classroom. This past spring, intern Lauren Seiler worked hard to get the exhibit cleaned, installed, and ready to receive our swarm. She also developed the educational materials at the bottom of this post.
Two weeks ago, Kerry Lynott from Penn State’s Department of Entomology sent over some folks with a wild-caught swarm that had been kept in supers for a few weeks before they were brought to us. The pictures below show how the bees were transferred into our hive exhibit. As they transferred the bees into the hive, they made sure that the queen came along so that the other bees would stay. With an experienced eye, they found her right away, and closed up hive!
