April 28th Bird Walk

A chilly and fairly quiet spring morning walk along the not-lake shore. After some initial difficulties, all seventeen of us did get an excellent view of a singing pine warbler, perched at the top of a walnut tree. Other highlights included a singing red-breasted nuthatch and purple finch and a drumming grouse. As I was opening the center’s gate, I was greeted with a First of the Year (FOY) ovenbird — the only one of the morning. Last Wednesday walk of the series on May 6, hope you and the neo-tropical migrants join us. Still plenty of county to cover for the migration count on May 8th.

The Saw-whet Owls, Jalled Hear that Bird, and the Turnstones are in for the Birding Cup and it looks like a record year for participation. But of course it will be doubly successful if we could also set a record for funds raised. Please consider sponsoring your favorite birder or at least urging the birds to hurry back to the ridges and valleys of central PA.
