Musser Gap Greenway

The Musser Gap Greenway spans 355 acres of farmland, trails, forests, and streams in Centre County. Since opening the Greenway Trail in 2014, Penn State has worked to make this space a valuable resource for education, conservation, and recreation. To realize this vision, management of the Greenway has been entrusted to Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, where we work with partners and collaborators to:

  • restore natural habitat
  • expand access to outdoor recreation
  • host high-quality programming
  • conduct impactful research
  • protect freshwater resources
  • enhance student success

Visitors can walk or bike the 1-mile Greenway Trail through a pastoral landscape and take in sweeping views of Shingletown Gap, Musser Gap, and Pine Grove Mills Gap against the striking backdrop of the Tussey Mountain ridgeline. The trail further serves as a valuable non-motorized connection between the State College area and Rothrock State Forest, expanding safe access to more than 96,000 acres of public land and a vast trail network that branches through Pennsylvania and beyond.

Situated at a confluence of residential, agricultural, and natural landscapes, the Musser Gap Greenway is home to a wide array of plants and wildlife. Notable sitings include the northern harrier, American kestrel, red-bellied snake, and cecropia moth.
